One of the most highly anticipated museums of the past decade, the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture is opening on September 24th on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. Curated with equal parts celebration and somber reflection, the establishment chronicles the richness and diversity of the African American experience and how it helped shape this nation.
The museum's permanent collection includes a wide range of exhibits and installations, including everything from replicas of cabins inhabited by slaves to the iconic outfits worn by famous black change-makers. The museum also features African American achievements in music, with such items on display as Michael Jackson's fedora from the Victory tour, a dress worn by Whitney Houston and Prince's tambourine.
We are pleased to announce that among the many iconic artists featured as part of the exhibit, The Pointer Sisters are honored and excited to be included in the museum. If you visit, you'll see a photograph of the group pictured in 1975 holding their first Grammy Award!
More than 150,000 people are expected to attend the museum's official grand opening ceremonies. President Barack Obama will be the keynote speaker.
UPDATE: Big brother Fritz Pointer proudly poses with the exhibit featuring his younger sisters, which highlights their Grammy win for their Country/Western hit "Fairytale", written by Anita Pointer and Bonnie Pointer.
